Insurance Agency Accounting Associate - Portland
United Insurance is hiring an Accounting Associate to join their agency located in Portland, Maine. We are looking for a motivated team player who will join our company, grow with us, and enjoy themselves along the way. Someone who is not afraid to work hard, think outside the box, and help us improve. We’re a strong company with a long history and we are continuing to grow.
In this position, the right candidate will be responsible for Insurance Agency Accounting, which can involve a very broad set of responsibilities. Among them (but not necessarily limited to):
- Provide overall accounting support (A/R, A/P, time billing, P/R, G/L, tax payments, special reports to assist with agency metrics, and month end reports), as assigned.
- Issue checks, transfer funds, prepare and record deposits, reconcile bank accounts and cash books with the General Ledger.
- File, Scan, Journal Entries.
- Print online commission statements and post commissions received.
- Print online Production reports.
- Assist in the budget process as needed, especially for assigned agencies.
- Manage financial statement preparation and month end and quarterly closing.
- Serve as company liaison with auditors as needed.
- Perform all basic accounting procedures, financial statement preparation, month end closing, journal entries and general ledger maintenance, and fixed assets and margin analysis; prepare supporting schedules for financial statements preparation.
- Communicate with carriers, agencies, etc. to address any past due invoices on their account and provide weekly status updates to management.
- Reconciliate as needed (clients billing, carrier reports, commission, and expense variances).
- Provide guidance to agencies on accounting, billing, and expense issues.
- Special projects and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business-related field preferred
- Exceptional organization and time management skills

- Multitask efficiently
- High attention to details, ability to take directions, self-check and follow up on work
- Basic data base experience, 10key by touch, calculator

ApplyInsurance Claims Advocate – Property & Casualty
United Insurance is seeking a candidate who enjoys the entire claims process. If you have experience with claims management, and enjoy working with energetic insurance professionals then you meet our team. The claims advocate role has a variety of responsibilities, and allows for a hybrid schedule. The primary responsibility of the Claims Advocate is to advocate on behalf of United Insurance clients, however other duties include interaction with carrier claim adjusters, internal team members, and occasionally attorneys. This position is an integral part of the Risk Services Team which continues to grow with the agency’s rapid growth.
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Report claim(s) to the insurance company/companies by phone, e-mail, or fax.
- Prepare claim analysis for individual, non-standard claim events to Clients and CE Teams.
- Engage in Client strategy, stewardship, pre-renewal and renewal meetings and conference calls as requested by the CE Teams.
- Participate in Client Executive Team meetings as requested.
- Facilitate communication and direct activity between the carrier, client, employee, claimant, etc., to final resolution.
- Design settlement strategies including any potential for third party recovery.
- Review claim determinations received from adjusters for compliance with policy conditions and handle coverage disputes.
- For those claims you are directly involved as an advocate for the client you will request the status of claims 30 days after submission and monitor regularly after that.
- Continue updating the status of a loss, making updates in the agency’s management system (Epic), as long as necessary until the claim is closed.
- Negotiate with Carrier Adjusters in closing/reducing claims for Property, Liability, and, prior to unit Stat date, for Workers Compensation.
- Ensure that loss runs and Mod Master (for WC) are requested in a timeframe allowing for financial impact to claim experience prior to unit Stat or renewal calculations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- BA/BS or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years of insurance experience required.
- Insurance designation such as CPCU, AIC, CIC, and/or ARM – preferred.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to others to explain complex issues, receives and interprets complex information, and responds in an appropriate, professional manner.
- Adept at utilizing carrier online claims systems and interpreting applicable claim data.
- Ability to work independently, as well as in co-ordination with other members of team.
- Ability to set priorities and manage workflow to ensure efficient, timely and accurate processing of transactions and other responsibilities.
- Working knowledge of property and casualty insurance coverages and usage.
- Working knowledge of claims adjustment process inside insurance companies.
- High level knowledge of computer and word processing programs such as Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook), and agency management systems.
- Property and Casualty Agents license – preferred.

Marketing:
- Develop an annual marketing budget for United Insurance working with vendors, agency mangers, and leadership.
- Create, manage, and monitor social media (Facebook, LinkedIn), advertising, events, email, as needed.
- Develop a marketing plan that reflects United’s goals and creates a strategy that supports our diversity.
- Collaborate with individual offices on ad creation and promotional needs.
- Organizes Trade shows annually from application process, staffing, promo items, insurance, FB posts, etc.
- Blitz Campaigns – work through entire process – data base research, design campaign (postcards, boxes, etc.), execute the timing of the campaign, follow-up with sales team.
- Collaborate on annual top client holiday gift and card.
- Order paper products, presentation folders, brochures, ID card holders for all offices, business cards, guide brochures, as needed.
- Order promotional items for company events as needed.
- Update renewals of URLs, IBEC hosting, and marketing memberships.

Community Engagement (Internal/External):
- Plans, develops, implements, and organizes the companywide employee recognition campaign.
